Second Nature

Second Nature is a digital behavioural change programme, proven to help people change their behaviours and reduce their risk and complications of type 2 diabetes.

It is delivered online, and combines several tried and tested solutions to help people make long-term changes to their lifestyle by gradually changing their diet, exercise, sleep, thought patterns and behaviours.
The first to trial this were the North West London CCGs to demonstrate how technology can make behavioural interventions more engaging, more scalable and more seamlessly integrated into people’s daily lives.
Trial outcomes have been extremely positive, with 83% of people completing the programme, losing approx. 6% of their body weight on average and increasing their activity levels by 22% – both recommended steps to delay the progression of the disease.

At a recent meeting between the Solent Diabetes Association and Partha Khar (QA Hospital) and Chris Edson (founder of Second Nature), we decided to fund the programme to the tune of £15,000 in the Portsmouth and South East Hants area; thus becoming only the 2nd to sign up for this. This money will fund 150 type 2 participants.
After liaising with local GPs surgeries, the 150 participants who are willing to participate will be given their machines and apps to link them. Wireless smart scales are just part of the set up and community activity is encouraged.

By putting our faith in this application we hope to help local people and perhaps encourage the NHS to get involved as well.
We wish to make a statement that we are AT THE FORE FRONT in treating people.
