The Solent Diabetes Association (SDA) is a Charitable Company Limited by guarantee.
It was founded in August 2007, with the purchase of a charity shop in Fareham. A further shop was leased in Gosport in 2012. There is an unpaid board of directors, which include 2 NHS employees directly involved in Diabetes.
The shops are staffed by part-time paid staff and volunteers.
The objects of the charity are:
- Providing relief and welfare for those with diabetes ( and their families), and its related complications.
- Promoting research into the nature, causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes, including self-management.
- Promoting education and increasing public awareness of diabetes.
The area of benefit is Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.
The SDA works closely with the Paediatric Diabetes Team at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, and also with the Diabetes Specialist Team, who provide education courses for newly diagnosed diabetics.
